Of Unicorns, Magic, & Romance

Warped by Maurissa Guibord
"A story of magic and love and destiny...that gets all tangled up."

Tessa Brody doesn't believe in magic. Or Fate. But there is definitely something weird about the dusty unicorn tapestry that she discovers in a box of old books. The wild, handsome creature woven within it draws Tessa, and frightens her too.

Soon after the tapestry comes into her possession strange things begin to happen. Tessa experiences vivid dreams of the past and scenes from a brutal hunt. When she accidentally pulls a thread from the tapestry, Tessa releases a terrible secret-one that has been contained for centuries.
She also meets William de Chaucy, a young sixteenth-century nobleman with gorgeous eyes, an odd accent and haughty attitude to spare. His fate is as inextricably tied to the tapestry as Tessa's own. "His Lordship" is pretty hard to get along with but equally hard to resist.

Together with Will, Tessa must correct the wrongs of the past to defeat a cruel and crafty ancient enemy.

But what is she willing to sacrifice in order to do it?

You would never believe that this is Maurissa's debut YA novel, it's just splendid. I mean there's a unicorn! Teenage girls will find themselves instantly connecting with Tessa. She lives a life many girls wish for...and I don't mean discovering  her soul mate is an English nobleman from another time period (although after reading Warped this is my new dream). I mean she lives on the second floor of a bookstore with endless books at her fingertips and a quirky, dependable best friend. Most importantly though an endless supply of reading material. {girlish squeal} William de Chaucy is quite the romantic interest though. You are given a few sections of Warped from his point of view*, which I enjoyed because it made him much more human. I felt I could understand why Will was so torn in trusting and loving Tessa, because I had seen what he had been through. Definitely enjoying the Will and Tessa dynamic.

But, don't forget, every great romance has to have that one person who tries to keep them apart. In this book that evil wretch is Grey Lily! She is the reason for Will's, and several other lost souls', entrapment in that magical tapestry. Keeping Will out of her clutches is what Tessa is fighting for, no matter what dangers are headed her way. Now that's what I call dedication to your man!

Possible Spoilers below....(just as a heads up)

The end was done perfectly. It leaves room for a sequel, but there hasn't been word of one in the works. It would be great to learn more about how Will and Tessa's fates intertwine and what is in store for Tessa.

I agree. I loved the ending. No lie. I was seriously reading and resisting the urge to hug the book from glee. The end was so adorable- it made me love Will SO much more. Anyway I won't give it completely away, but I do hope Maurissa writes a sequel. Warped can stand on its own, but a sequel would be icing on the cupcake. There are some cryptic story lines that could be cleared up in a sequel including; what power Tessa possesses, the consequences of Will's time swap, how the threads became intertwined, and what happened to the other souls.

*(for all you readers who hate dual narrators don't be alarmed, it's only a few paragraphs)
