Of Invisibility, Hidden Attractions, & Spotlights

In the Spotlight by Ann Mauren
"One of the most unique young adult books I have ever read."

Ellery Mayne has made a disburbing discovery.  After a foiled abduction attempt, she realizes that an entire security detail has been shadowing her every move, protecting her from danger she didn’t know she was in.  Working to uncover the secrets behind her mysterious guardians, she carefully conducts her own surveillance, testing the limits of professionals who think she is clueless about them.
Ellery’s attachment to her protectors grows as it becomes clear their care for her goes beyond the promise of a paycheck.  Summoning all her courage, she declares her feelings for her favorite agent, Ash Ryan, who is blindsided with joy and a sweet romance unfolds.  But they must carefully hide their love because his team will lose its lucrative security contract if their mysterious employer learns of Ellery’s secret relationship with Ash.
When her first love, Grayson Gregory, abruptly returns seeking to rekindle a relationship that she thought was over forever, she suspects she’s discovered the source of her security team’s employment.  Deeply buried affections for Grayson resurface and battle with the love and loyalty she feels for Ash.   Probing for the answers she needs and conscious that her actions will impact so many, Ellery finds that her life is ‘In The Spotlight’ and that she is the ‘Mayne Attraction.’

Can I marry a book? Because if so In the Spotlight would definitely be on my list of fiancées. The plot is FANTASTIC and Ann Mauren did a super job at creating characters than can stand alone and merge together to make a perfect story. It had everything a book needs: murder, intrigue, secrets, romance, complications, love triangles, etc. You name it, Ann Mauren had it in there.

I've said it many times, on different websites and to different people: I'm SUPER excited about this book. I mean I've been excited about books before, but this one is just...special. And it's not just the book that's special. It takes an awesomely special author to write such an amazing book. And the book is beyond amazing.

In the Spotlight is such a different book from what I normally read. There was no paranormal anything in the book, just a normal heroine and that is what made the book awesome. Ellery was just like every other shy girl, except she had a butt-kicking secret security team. I felt like I was in her place and felt so many emotions because of her life. Basically, I felt like I was in the book; when she was happy, so was I; when she was depressed, so was I. You don't find that often in many books, that escape but also the emotions that come with it. But it was Ash Ryan, sexy secret security extraordinarie, that made life better (Sigh).

When Ellery meets Ash, it's like life in her world (and mine) was complete! They were so cute and adorable together, and I must say I was a little jealous, LOL. Ash was everything Ellery's dreams were made of and more! He nice, romantic, shy, incredible, hot and sexy, and everything in between. He made life as Ellery Mayne: Center of Attention worth wild and gave her the type of love that Monica, her mother, or Sam and Trevor, her framily, couldn't give. It's decided that everyone needs a Hoyt, a Goth, and an Ash in their life.

Another thing about Ellery is that almost everyone that she associates with is older, and taller, than her. But, I guess that shows how mature she really is. She can handle adults and the progress she made after meeting Sam opened her up some and took away some of her shyness. It was real life growth and development and I loved it!

I'm probably a biased opinion when it comes to this book, but I don't care. This book will always be AMAZING after the one millionth time I read it, it just keeps getting better. I know this book is freaking great because I finished it in one day, and only books that I find amazingly fantastic I finish that quickly. I can't explain the level of super duper AMAZING-NESS that this book is on. Oh, and I can't forget the author!

Ann Mauren is a bona-fide genius with reality in her grasp. She values every comment from her readers and see us as extended family! Ann's ability to create such an fantastic book is astounding and I hope people recognize her for the great author she is. I've had the chance to email her and she is the epitome of what an excited author should be. The passion and joy she gets out of just talking about her work of art is contagious and makes you want to continue to read her work. I can't what to she what she's done with her next two books, In the Smoke and In the Shadows!

  1. Wow! G6? I'd like to thank the academy, my 10th grade English teacher, and Hershey's Chocolate for this award...

Seriously, thank you for such an enthusiastic, persuasive take on Mayne Attraction! This is a review I will have to look at whenever I feel down about my writing (or when some mean reviewer does--LOL!)

I'm pleased that you enjoyed the absence of paranormal influences in the story. In regard to that I like to joke round and say that my characters do all their own stunts!

I'm also glad that you enjoyed watching Ellery's personal growth and development towards grown womanhood.

My favorite line from the review was: "It's decided that everyone needs a Hoyt, a Goth, and an Ash in their life." That made me laugh out loud, but, goodness is it true!

Thank you for such a head-swelling fantastic review!

    Ann
